Red lips are so in right now, and really make a statement when you walk in the door. I usually don’t wear lipstick because my boyfriend refuses to give me kisses if I have anything too shiny or too colored on my lips, but sometimes if I’m going out for a night on the town I like to spice my look up a little by adding some color to my lips! Here’s the steps I take to achieve luscious lips.
Prep Lips – Just like applying a foundation, you want to apply lip stick to lips that are basically a blank canvas. Start off by exfoliating your lips with either a toothbrush or a lip scrub. One of my favorite lip scrubs is Fresh Lip Polish that can be found at Sephora. All you need of this stuff is about the size of the white part of your fingernail, that’s all it takes. Apply to your lips and either rub the formula in with your fingers, or rub your lips together until the formula is basically dissolved into your lips. Afterwards your lips should feel extremely smooth, and ready for lipstick application!
Moisten Your Lips – Apply a little bit of chapstick or lip balm on your exfoliated lips, right now I am loving Baby Lips by Maybelline which can be found at your local drugstore. This will help your lips stay hydrated, and also will allow the lipstick to stay better on your lips. Leave the balm on for as long as you can while your doing your other makeup, then gently rub it off with a tissue.
Color Them In – Next find a lip pencil that matches the color of your lipstick as closely as possible. Your best bet is to go to Sephora or a counter in the mall to have a professional correctly match the pencil and the stick. Next take the pencil and line your lips, making sure to not go outside your natural lip line. Then go in and fill the rest of your lips in. Doing this will help your lipstick really take hold of your lips, and stay on longer than just lipstick itself.
Find a Shade that Works for You – If you are fair skinned do not fear the red lipstick. Many women with fair skin fear that red lipstick can make them look clownish, but don’t fret there’s a perfect shade for you! Taylor Swift is a prime example of a pale skinned person who rocks the red lips. Try to find a shade as close to classic red as you can, avoiding anything with pink in it. A perfect shade for fair skin is Dior Rouge Lipstick in Red Premier which can be found at Sephora.
If you have medium skin, darker hues of red will work best with your skin color. Try out Very Cherry by Maybelline ($5.50).
Finally if you are of darker skin, or maybe just have a great tan in the summer, try to find a red shade that has orangey undertones to it. Lady Danger by MAC(14.50) is one of the bests for your skin color!
Apply with a Brush – To get a precise look make sure that you are using a brush to apply the lipstick this helps to really get ever place on your lips. I like Mac Pro Brush in 316
Finishing Touches- To ensure that the color does not bleed apply a small amount of concealer around your lips. This will help prevent the color straying from your lips!
